Passing score of PMI® exams

Questo articolo è utile per i candidati che desiderano acquisire una credenziale PMI. Molti candidati mi chiedono qual è il punteggio di passaggio dell’esame (es. PMP®, CAPM®, PMI-ACP®, ..)? Così qui si possono trovare alcune informazioni utili su questo punteggio di superamento.

Innanzitutto, devo dire che il PMI non pubblica nel Manuale (handbook) di ciascuna credenziale l'esatto punteggio di superamento dell’esame. Il punteggio di superamento per tutti gli esami delle credenziali PMI è determinato da quello che il PMI stesso chiama un’analisi “psychometric”.

Il PMI utilizza infatti degli esperti in materia (cosiddetti SME) da tutto il mondo per farsi aiutare a stabilire una soglia che ogni candidato deve superare per passare l'esame e il punto di difficoltà dell’esame stesso. Pertanto, il minimo punteggio per superare l’esame varia per ogni esame e si basa sulla difficoltà del esame stesso. Significa anche che se si incontrano all’esame tante domande semplici, la percentuale di superamento può essere superiore rispetto alla percentuale di superamento se si incontrano domande più difficili. Così, il numero minimo di risposte corrette necessarie per superare l'esame è determinato dalla difficoltà generale dell'esame.

Pertanto, quando ci si prepara per l'esame, non bisogna fare affidamento solo su una sola simulazione. È invece consigliabile provare domande da varie differenti simulazioni d’esame al fine di comprendere i propri punti di forza e di debolezza.

È altresì consigliabile utilizzare il vecchio suggerimento delle 61% di risposte corrette come punto di partenza durante lo studio e aggiungere un 15% in più per tenere conto della variabilità in termini di difficoltà dell’esame.

In sostanza, il punteggio di superamento è diverso per ogni candidato.

Inoltre, ogni candidato non ha bisogno di ottenere una performance di tipo Proficient e Moderately Proficient in tutti e i domini (i 5 gruppi di processi per l’esame PMP) per superare l'esame. Infatti, se un candidato passerà o no l'esame è giudicato sulla base della performance complessiva della prova. Ho personalmente conosciuto infatti candidati che hanno ottenuto due " Below Proficient" e tuttavia hanno superato l'esame!

This article is useful for candidates who wants to acquire a PMI credential. Many candidates ask me what is the passing score of exam (e.g. PMP®, CAPM®, PMI-ACP®, ..)? So here you can find some information regarding this passing score.

First of all, I have to say that PMI has not mentioned the exact passing score in th Handbook of each credential. The passing score for all PMI credential examinations is determined by sound psychometric analysis. PMI uses subject matter experts from across the globe to help establish a point at which each candidate should pass the exam and the exam point of difficulty.

Therefore, the minimum mark of pass percentage varies for each exam, and is based on the exam's difficulty. It also means that if you get lots of easy questions on the exam, your pass percentage may be higher compared to the pass percentage if you get tougher questions correct.

So, the minimum number of correct answers needed to pass the exam is determined by the overall difficultly of the exam.

Therefore, when preparing for your exam, do not just rely on a single mock exam. It is more advisable to try questions from several different mock exams in order to understand your own strengths and weaknesses.

It is also advisable to make use of the old “61% passing score” as your starting point and add 15% more to account for the fluctuation in exam difficulties.

Basically, the passing score for every candidate is different.

In addition, any candidate does not need to Get Proficient and Moderately Proficient in all domains (the 5 process groups for PMP exam) to Pass the exam. In fact, whether a candidate will pass or fail the exam is judged on the overall performance of the exam. I have personally know some candidates who got two “Below Proficient” and yet pass the exam!
